ASEAN Summit, 27 February – 1 March 2009, Thailand

The 14th ASEAN Summit will be held in Hua Hin, Thailand, on 27 February 2009 – 1 March 2009. At the Opening Ceremony, ASEAN Leaders will, for the first time, listen to the ASEAN Anthem. Called “The ASEAN Way”, the anthem was selected in a region-wide contest last year. According to Article 40 of the ASEAN Charter, which came into force on 15 December 2008, ASEAN shall have an anthem.

The theme for the summit is the “ASEAN Charter for ASEAN Peoples”. In keeping with the theme, the ASEAN Leaders will meet, among others, ASEAN inter-parliamentary representatives, ASEAN youth representatives and ASEAN civil society representatives.

Several documents are due to be signed by the Leaders at the summit. They include the Agreement establishing the ASEAN-Australia New Zealand Free Trade Area and the Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Good Manufacturing Practice of Medicinal Products.

ASEAN Leaders also will endorse the ASEAN Political-Security Blueprint and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Blueprint, which can been seen as masterplans to guide ASEAN towards achieving the ASEAN Political-Security Community and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community respectively. The third blueprint, the ASEAN Economic Community, was endorsed by ASEAN Leaders at the 13th ASEAN Summit in Singapore in November 2007.
